HOW I GOT MY HAIR TO GROW BACK AFTER CANCER

My hair has always been my trademark, if you will. I was born with a lot of hair. It’s curly, much like most other Moroccan-descendants I know.

I began to notice I was losing hair after I gave birth to my first child. It was falling out in the shower, it was all over my pillow in the morning and it was all over the floor. When I consulted my ob/gyn about it, he said that it was normal after giving birth. I expressed to him my concern about the sheer volume I was losing but again he said not to worry that it was only the new hair I had grown from the hormones of pregnancy and that my hair would be back to normal like before I got pregnant.

That never happened.

I had two more children within the span of three years and my hair loss was horrible. To the outside people who didn’t know me, they probably wouldn’t have noticed much more than a receding hair line, a couple of balding spots (which I always cleverly hid) but I knew and it was really getting to me.

After I gave birth to my third child, I had begun to notice that I was extremely tired all the time. Again, my ob/gyn said it was because I had three kids in practically three years and I was working harder than ever.

My husband and I decided to go for the fourth child pretty much as soon as I gave birth to the third because of my PCOS. When a couple of months passed and I still wasn’t getting pregnant, I went for an ultrasound. That’s when they found the cancer.

So my hair was not only falling out because of the pregnancies but also because of the cancer and it was only the beginning of my hair loss.

After my surgery, the hair loss was extreme. I would wake up to find clumps of hair on my pillow. My husband would always show a brave face when he would find globs of hair on my pillow but I could always see the fear in his eyes. I would joke about it – because that’s how I cope with things – but deep down I was hurting. I know hair seems so insignificant in the grand scheme of things but I knew how much my husband loved my hair, never even allowing me to trim it when it desperately needed it.

I had done a lot of research online and what worked for me was castor oil. I am going to walk you through the process I did every night to help regrow my eyebrows, my eyelashes and every other night on my head. I still to do this, just less frequently, to maintain beautiful hair.

NATHALIE’S NIGHTLY HAIR GROWTH RITUAL:

For your brows and your lashes, it’s relatively easy. All you have to do is soak a Q-tip in organic extra virgin castor oil and rub it on your brows and lashes. Yes, it’s sticky but it works. Make sure to only use organic extra virgin cold-pressed castor oil.

For your head: Castor oil is a very thick oil. I used to use it directly on my scalp and work it in very well by utilizing scalp massaging techniques. I would take my time and make sure it was rubbed in well. I would then tie my hair (or what was left of it) in a bun and wear a shower cap to bed. I prefer the terry cloth lined ones because they are more comfortable. It does ruin the cap but I didn’t care since it was used just for this purpose every other night.

What’s important when re-growing hair is not to do anything to it. This means no direct heat, even sun exposure, no prolonged ponytail wearing, no hot water and definitely no hair dye. I know it seems hard. I used to love a fresh blow dry but I promise you after 6 months, your hair will grow back and it will be very healthy.
